Clifftown Area
Clifftown’s story began in 1856 with the arrival of the railway, transforming the area into a sought-after destination. Developers Samuel Peto, Thomas Brassey, and Edward Betts purchased 40 acres on the cliffs to create a 300-home estate, attracting London’s first Southend commuters.
Designed by Banks & Barry, Clifftown’s elegant terraces were built around ornamental gardens, offering a retreat where city life met the serenity of the sea. Though time has softened its grandeur, Clifftown’s historic charm endures, with its distinctive architecture and green spaces still providing a peaceful escape in the heart of Southend.
